Basin and play assessment

Exploration and production is a staged decision process, not one technical exercise. It moves from regional geology to investment, drilling, development, production management, and decommissioning. The available evidence changes at each stage, while capital at risk rises and decisions become harder to reverse.

Basin analysis asks whether source, reservoir, seal, trap, charge, and timing could combine into a working petroleum system. Regional seismic, gravity, magnetics, wells, geochemistry, and mapping may contribute. A technically interesting basin is not automatically commercial; infrastructure, access, fiscal terms, environmental constraints, and market context also matter.

From play fairway to prospect

At prospect scale, seismic interpretation maps structure, stratigraphy, reservoir distribution, and uncertainty. Depth conversion, faults, rock physics, and attributes help define a drillable hypothesis, but a closed contour alone is not a prospect. Reservoir, seal, and charge must coincide in the correct sequence.

Volumetrics depend on uncertain area, thickness, porosity, saturation, and recovery. These inputs should be represented as distributions or scenarios. Geological chance of success and potential volume answer different questions and should remain separate in decision communication.

Drilling as an information event

An exploration well tests a subsurface hypothesis and measures lithology, pressure, fluid, temperature, age, reservoir quality, and seismic calibration. Location can therefore balance discovery probability with information value.

Pre-drill predictions should be recorded before results are known. This distinguishes genuine forecast skill from explanations constructed after the fact and turns both discovery and failure into organizational learning.

Appraisal, development, and surveillance

A discovery shifts the question from existence to commerciality. Appraisal constrains extent, connectivity, contacts, pressure, and productivity. Static geological models and dynamic simulation are connected but not interchangeable; geological detail does not guarantee predictive flow behaviour.

Development planning evaluates wells, facilities, injection, rate, and recovery under alternative models. Where the subsurface is weakly constrained, a plan that can adapt may be more valuable than one optimized for a single deterministic case.

Production continuously tests the model. Rates, pressure, fluids, logs, and time-lapse geophysics provide evidence about connectivity and displacement. History matching is useful, but many parameter combinations can reproduce the past, so forecasts should be checked against withheld time periods or independent measurements.

Closure belongs in the original decision

Plugging, facility removal, restoration, and long-term monitoring have technical and financial consequences. Well-integrity records and pressure knowledge acquired during production become essential inputs to responsible closure and possible future storage reuse.
